Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speaking event organizer. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos featuring commentary and analysis of gender representations in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for nearly a decade. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in pop culture. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in popular culture, she seeks to bring attention to harassment targeted at women as well as other classes of people in the online space. Sarkeesian is a graduate in the fields of social thought and political science at York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaking. Sarkeesian delivered speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university, Sarkeesian became concerned about issues related to gender identity and women's rights from a young age. She had a plan to create an online program that would examine the gender roles in games but was the target of an online harassment campaign. This attack didn't stop her, rather it strengthened her resolve as feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the feminist field are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a journalist. She is also the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organisation that studies pop culture gender representations.
